Camagüey was one of the first seven settlements that the Spanish conquerors founded in Cuba.
Originally called Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, the oldest part of the city, with its many important government and religious buildings, is a national monument.
Other attractions include nearby Santa Lucía Beach, which is ideal for scuba diving because the longest coral reef in the Cuban archipielago is just offshore.
